Annual Learn To Camp hosts refugees

From August 22 to 24, our Immigration and Settlement Service hosted its 4th annual Learn To Camp in Jasper National Park with 50 government-assisted refugees who have arrived in Canada within the last six months.

The participants learned how to set up tents, roast hot dogs, cut wood and start fire. They also learned about wildlife and had the opportunity to go canoeing and learn about the history of the canoe in Canada.

Perhaps the most memorable event was the camp fire sing along. Led by Immigration and Settlement Service ministry Team Leader and Edmonton musician Frank Bessai, everybody sang and drummed together in at least seven languages on  this special night, encouraging the northern lights to come out and share Canada’s natural beauty with this most appreciative group of new Canadians.

Special thanks to Parks Canada and the Mountain Equipment Co-op for their partnership, and to Travis McEwan of CBC for creating such a memorable news story out of the event.
