News Release - August 28, 2025

Edmonton, AB – Catholic Social Services (CSS) successfully hosted its annual signature event, "Evening at the Mac," as part of the organization's kick-off of the Sign of Hope campaign. This year's campaign is chaired by Father Jim Corrigan and aims to raise $3 million to support critical programs serving the most vulnerable members of Edmonton's community.

Sign of Hope serves as CSS's charitable arm, raising essential funds for programs that would not exist without community generosity. These initiatives have a profound impact on the lives of those most in need throughout the region.

"Our goal this year is to raise $3 million, and we truly believe that with the community's help and by encouraging others to join our cause, we won't just meet that number, we will surpass it," said Fr. Jim Corrigan. "Every act of support helps us transform lives, and together, we will make our communities better."

Inspiring Stories of Hope
The evening featured compelling guest speakers, Arynn and Brad —a couple who have served as CSS foster parents since 2017. After raising four daughters of their own, they opened their home and hearts to become part of a child's story of hope. What began as respite care transformed into fostering and ultimately progressed to the adoption of their only son.

In their closing statement to the gala attendees, they shared a heartfelt testimonial, "It's an honour being chosen to be someone's safe harbour, family, and sometimes, their forever home. That's the greatest gift you'll ever receive."

Terry Mahon Spirit of Philanthropy Award
This year's recipient of the Terry Mahon Spirit of Philanthropy Award was Mr. Ben Hochhausen, recognized for his unwavering support of the Sign of Hope campaign from its inception. Hochhausen also played a significant role in launching CSS's Care-a-Van program, which provides essential services to unhoused Edmontonians.

"His generosity has left a lasting legacy that will touch lives in deeply meaningful ways," noted CSS Board Chair Joe Spelliscy. "CSS & Sign of Hope is truly blessed to have Ben as a long-time friend and supporter."

Background:
Catholic Social Services has been bringing hope to vulnerable Albertans for more than 60 years. Today, CSS is one of the largest providers of social services in Canada, serving more than 21,000 people annually, across three priority areas: newcomers to Canada, individuals with disabilities, and children, individuals, and families.

Sign of Hope, the charitable fundraising arm of CSS, provides funding for a dozen programs each year. Donations to Sign of Hope empower CSS to meet the unique and pressing needs of those it serves across dozens of programs and services. Funds raised help women and children fleeing domestic violence, seniors experiencing isolation and abuse, vulnerable and recently housed individuals, teens and youth who are at-risk-of, or experiencing, sexual exploitation, and those in need of mental health services.

Donations can be made online at www.cssalberta.ca/signofhope or by calling (780) 439-HOPE (4673).
