International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness Day

Every year on September 9, we observe International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness Day.

FASD is known to affect approximately 4% of Canadians. Through a number of comprehensive programs, Catholic Social Services (CSS) works to lift these individuals and their families to greater heights of stability and self-reliance.

CSS works with women at risk of having an FASD child, youth coping with FASD, and families who are supporting children living with FASD, through a number of programs including mentorship, advocacy, and guidance for navigating life with an FASD diagnosis. We host monthly parent support groups and monthly education mornings. Additionally, we offer connections to family school wellness supports, FSCD (respite care), psychiatrists, and FASD assessment.

CSS also has outreach supports for adults coping with life after an FASD diagnosis or suspected diagnosis that may need assistance developing life skills. We provide support with budgeting, banking, grocery shopping, problem solving, and crisis intervention, as well as referrals to AISH, income support, housing programs, FASD assessment, and employment programs.
